“I must first know myself, as the Delphian inscription says; to be curious about that which is not my concern, while I am still in ignorance of my own self would be ridiculous.”
Plato
INTRODUCTION
The most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself. Most people go through life either never really liking themselves, knowing themselves, listening to themselves or understanding themselves. Is it any wonder then that there are complications when it comes to aspects of your life like succeeding in business, living a happy life or maintaining good relationships?
Until you get to know yourself better, what you like, what makes you tick, what you dislike, your strengths and weaknesses you will always be insecure within yourself. When you know who you are, what you stand for and your values and beliefs, you can then stand on firm ground through life and take a strong stance when it comes to business, success and relating to the people around you.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ROLE MODEL
So, what can you do? Well, firstly, you need to look at who your role models are very carefully as you need to be sure that you can be the man you really want to be. The greatest visionaries are those who can see the world in a different light, or from a new and improved perspective. They look to improve on what everyone else accepts without question and takes for granted. Rather than accept their lot in life they look for alternative options to enhance and enrich their lives and those around them. Those few individuals who break free of the ´system` and go against the grain are more often than not the ones who bring about a new era of advancement for human kind.
However, they are also sometimes looked upon as revolutionaries, mavericks and a thorn in the side of `acceptable´ society, and even though their ideas bring about a new era they are often frowned upon. The average person in the world doesn’t want change and are often scared by individuals who think for themselves. Instead they want the conformity of the masses, acceptance without question and possibly meekness.
And don’t fall for misquoted, misunderstood and misinterpreted statements that you will have heard many times in your life like, “money is the root of all evil”, or “the meek shall inherit the Earth”. For example, scholars are now in agreement that a better translation of the statement – “the meek shall inherit the Earth” – into English is, “the DISCIPLINED shall inherit the Earth”.
