My thoughts on Purium products, supergreens and dieting
I’ve studied nutrition, dieting and healthy eating for three decades now. And I wonder if I have approached this from a direction that not many people will have considered. It’s not a new concept. It is a practice that is taught to military special forces around the world, survival experts, yoga practitioners, therapists and is even taught in traditional martial arts, which is where I first learned of the idea. But I haven’t heard of many people applying this methodology to testing the effects of diets on their own person before.

What could survival skills have to do with you, your food, Purium and your health?
Well, let’s go back to Maslov’s Law of Hierarchy. He stated that people have to meet the lowest level of needs before they can advance up the pyramid to ‘safety’ and onwards towards ‘self-actualisation’. But surely our basic requirements for food and water are getting met aren’t they? We have supermarkets full of food, right?

Yes, and, no. If the supermarkets were full of healthy food the western world in particular wouldn’t have so many nutrition related health conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Whilst there are vast a mounts of what is marketed as “food”, it is far from the nutrition we need to take us to the next level of Maslov’s pyramid, which is safety.
We need to come to our senses, and start learning how to sense again which foods are safe to consume and which are not. This is where the survival skills we have used as a species come into use again in the modern age. We need to stop consuming everything that is advertised to us, everything that is available in the supermarkets. We need to stop, take a deep breath and consciously decide whether something is healthy or not.
If you are in the wilds of nature and come across plants, fruits, nuts and seeds that you don’t recognise, they could kill you if you consume them. The same is true today with some of the foods that we are being sold. Therefore, we need to apply the same principles as the survivalist, because at the end of the day you must be aware that at least some of the foods sold in supermarkets are just not healthy.
I’ve listed the first few levels of testing a survivalist uses when testing if a food is healthy or not and if you want to see other steps please click on the graphic here. This is what was taught to me by my Grandmaster with the advice to practice it with EVERYTHING I choose to consume.
I don’t recommend you trying this unless you have been trained by a professional:
- Separate the food items into parts, like leaves, petals, stem, roots.
- Smell each of the parts. If they smells bad, pungent, acidic, best to avoid them (imagine how some of the chemicals and additives in foods would smell if they were not masked by other ingredients, and would you then eat them?)
- Test for contact poisoning by rubbing it on some soft skin like the inner arm. (does this sound overkill? The NHS uses skin patch testing to test if people react to certain food all the time)
- Then prepare and consume just a tiny piece and sense how your body reacts to it. And that is where the training of the yoga practitioners, martial artists, therapists and people like that should kick in, as normally in those disciplines, awareness of the body and mind is central to their teachings. Therefore, sensing the affect of what they consume has on them should be second nature.
You would be amazed at what you can train yourself to sense in your own body. Could you imagine
feeling the blood running through your veins, your heart beating, your internal organs moving? Stig Severinsen teaches how to train this technique in his book Breathology, which is as you may have guessed is all about breathing. But to master your breathing, you have to learn to develop your senses and become aware of your body, mind and spirit.
Survival skills and diets
I remember hearing about my Grandmasters first trip to the UK to teach martial arts. On the first morning of training he arrived for breakfast in the hotel and all the top students from around the world were waiting to breakfast with him. They all ordered their usual food such as, coffee, sausages, toast, jam, eggs and everything else that the typical person eats.
He then ordered almost everything that they ordered. Everyone was surprised at his appetite. However, when the food arrived, he took just a little bit from each plate, poured some coffee and vinegar on top, mixed it together and then started eating it. Everyone was sitting there wide eyed, but nobody dared to question what he was doing. When they finally summoned the courage to tell him that was not the way to eat all those foods, he politely explained his actions.
The Grandmaster wanted to know how the food they were all eating was affecting their body and minds. He could sense it immediately on his own person when he ate those foods and so had a good idea it was affecting them the same way. Without going down a different article, it was also a good way to know where he should strike them and what pressure points would hurt them the most, but that’s not important here.
I’ve used this same technique to understand the effects of fad diets on people’s health and well-being. Although I made the bad decision one year to find out what it’s like to consume all the Christmas food people eat in the festive season. After only a few days I honestly thought I was dying I felt that bad. Worse still, it took me years to get off of the addiction to cane sugar after that.
