Seems like something so simple doesn’t it. But when you hear Admiral William McRaven share why it’s so important to make your bed every morning you really get to understand that it is the little tiny details that make you great.

Here’s the video:

I was never taught to make my bed as a kid, but about 6 or 7 years ago I started and it was a great decision. This morning, however, I went back into my bedroom and I made it perfect. It looks wonderful and made me so happy.

Did you know it was a bed that helped the British Cycling Team win the Tour De France?

Well, Sir David John “Dave” Brailsford, CBE is credited with championing a philosophy of ‘marginal gains’ at British Cycling:

This included transporting the cyclists personal mattresses with them through every leg of the tour sobradley-wiggins-cycling-team the cyclists would always get a perfect nights sleep and not end up possibly losing a nights sleep on an uncomfortable mattress at random hotels.

“The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together”

As well as looking at traditional components of success such as physical fitness and tactics, Brailsford’s approach focused on a more holistic strategy, embracing technological developments and also athlete psychology. He is noted for his emphasis on constant measuring and monitoring of key statistics such as cyclists’ power output, and developing training interventions that target any observed weaknesses.
